When we first started our adoption journey we were open to adopting a child from any race, but in preparing for our future child, we had a hard time finding books with multi-ethnicities featured. Many books were all Caucasian children, and we were mostly certain we would end up with a child who was not white, so we started our search for some quality kids books that took this into consideration, one of which being Shoebox Sam...
Book Description: The pink slippers on the wall catch her eye. 'Those are the most beautiful shoes I've seen in all my life.' Down at the corner of Magnolia and Vine, you'll find the shop of Shoebox Sam--where old shoes become like new again and anyone in need finds a friend. Delia and Jessie spend Saturdays with Shoebox Sam, helping him with customers, rich and poor. They learn about giving and caring, loving and sharing. Then one day, when a customer notices a prized pair of shoes, they uncover their greatest lesson of all.
Next we came across a series that was one of my favorites growing up, which is the Berenstain Bears. Each book focuses on a life lesson, and I may not have always applied these lessons growing up, but I think they have real value in teaching children how to treat others and how to make wise decisions. Cartoon books are easier to find in "race-friendly" varieties, especially when the main characters are animals :).
Zondervan publishes some really great family-friendly books that I can't wait to read to our little one, as he continues to grow!
Oh I love these books,,Ive 8 grandchildren an they love for me to read to them
