Yale Digital Door Viewer

YRL just released a new Digital Door Viewer product that not only enhances home security, it lets you skip the whole “who’s there?” routine when answering the front door using an old fashioned peephole. Essentially caller ID for the front door, Yale DigitalDoor Viewers replace a door’s standard peephole with a 3.2-inch screen to provide a clear view of who’s outside. Premium models allow you to record and store video or still images via an internal MicroSD card. 

It’s a simple way to boost home security, and especially valuable for children or those in a wheelchair who typically can’t see out a door’s peephole. 

I recently had the chance to review the Digital Door Viewer by Yale.  I liked several key features such as the ability to record images, the built-in LED for assisted night viewing and the sleek, clean design. This would be a helpful piece of technology for those who want an added sense of security and visually impaired individuals who may have trouble looking into a tiny peephole. It is great for our 2 year old to know who is at the door (ie grandma, mailman or stranger). He usually gets scared when someone is at the door and runs to mom [see photo], but if he could see who was on the other side, he may not be. On the contrary, there were two drawbacks such as the fact you need an existing peephole for easy installation and the door viewer remains tethered to the door.  If I am upstairs or in the basement, it would be much easier to have remote access to the door viewer instead of having to run to the door to see who is there.  Overall, I would give this three out of five stars.

For long days when I am nannying from morning until night, or the days when I'm running around with my kids and unable to recharge my phone it's nice to have a product like this handy. However, it's only helpful if you have the phone charging cord with you. My husband and I share one wall iphone charger, so I rarely take it from home. In this case, the clutchette isn't helpful for me as I didn't have the charge cord for the phone. If the standard usb cord would fit directly into the phone it would be fantastic, but since it doesn't I don't find it helpful. For people who have the charger with them at all times and just need a USB for power, this is what you need!

Say Goodbye to Mess with the Black & Decker Pivot!

Over the past month I have been using the Black and Decker Lithium Pivot to pick up all kinds of things like pet hair, litter, pet food, crumbs and dust bunnies.  We have one adopted son, one dog, two cats and a revolving door of foster children coming in and out of our home, so one can only imagine the number of times we are cleaning up messes, from our two-legged and four-legged children. I used the Pivot on a variety of surfaces such as the furniture, carpeted steps, tile, hardwood and our children's bedding. 

I am impressed with the lightweight design, onboard tools and the suction power packed into this Pivot Vac.  The Vac was easy to use and the pictures on the buttons were also very helpful.  In my opinion, one of the best things this Vac has to offer are the onboard tools.  It comes equipped with an onboard crevice tool and brush that are always at hand and the pivoting nose feature enables easy cleaning for all those hard to reach areas.  We have owned other dust busters in the past and always had a hard time keeping track of where we left the attachments.  Hats off to Black and Decker for the onboard tools that will never get lost!  

The sound of the motor is also something that needs to be mentioned.  It is not loud like other Vacs and therefore does not scare our children or animals.  If you are a parent, you get my drift :)  

My one recommendation would be that the crevice tool was a bit longer and sleeker. When using my Vac in the kitchen, I tried cleaning under the stove and refrigerator, but the tool was too big to fit in those areas.  Also, when trying to clean under the entertainment stand, it would have been helpful if the tool was a bit longer.  

Overall, I am highly satisfied with this product and give it 4.5 out of 5 stars!  In a few months many of you will be cleaning up pine needles, tinsel, glitter and all other things associated with Christmas decorations.  Now is the perfect time to think about purchasing this Vac for those nuisance messes that are bound to be here before you know it.

I think this is a really great idea. When my step sister came over a few weeks ago her Kindle was dying and we were on our way out to a Christmas light show, so I let her use our magicstick portable charger to charger her kindle on our way and it saved the day. My step sister is a readaholic, which I think is fantastic, and I'm just glad we were able to help in her time of need :) I also love using it to charge my phone when I'm in my car and not near an outlet. It is a very handy thing to have!

D-Link Day/Night Network Cloud Camera

I recently had the chance to review the D-Link Day/Night Network Cloud Camera (DCS-933L) 

Whether at work, school, a local coffee shop or the other side of the world, D-Link makes it possible for me to always have a front row seat to what is going on in my home at all times.  With D-Link's advanced technology of day/night viewing, I am able to position my camera in the nursery and view our son during waking and non-waking hours.  The D-Link was the best option when it came to installing a camera in the nursery.  Keep in mind, we already had a video baby camera in the nursery, but with only one monitor, it made viewing options limited.  Gone are the days of running upstairs to grab the monitor, searching high and low for where we last left it and not being able to have remote access at all times.  D-Link makes it possible to turn everyday electronics such as a computer, i-Pad, i-Pod, cell phone, etc. into a working monitor. My husband loves the fact he is able to log in to the secure website while at work and have the ability to both hear and see his five favorites (me of course, our son Braeden, our dog Millie and two cats Abby and Dewey).  He is able to catch a glimpse of the life of a stay-at-home-mom, which is in my opinion, one of the most important jobs in the world.  Logging into the secure website was easy, just enter login and password and up pops the video.  In the near future, we hope to carve time out for date nights, which means finding a reliable and trustworthy babysitter.  Although I know we will find someone that gives us peace of mind, it is assuring to know that we will always be able to check-in on our son at any moment.  

We did have some hang-ups when it came to linking our camera to our wi-fi network.  For some reason, the camera did not pick up our network and the light on the back of the camera did not turn solid green as directions stated it would, despite resetting the camera.  On the contrary, using the supplied Ethernet cable was a breeze, but did not meet our needs.  We needed the camera wirelessly set up.  We finally broke down and called D-Link support.  The technician was extremely helpful; however, we were on hold for 17 minutes before speaking to a live person.  

During a live video feed, you are also able to take a still photo.  I like the idea, but the picture quality was poor.  

Overall, I do feel this is a good product for the price point.  Be sure to check out the website and see for yourself.  Happy viewing :) 

NetZero 4G

From laptops to tablets to the iPad, our family is on the move with technology, with the exception of our simple cellular devices.   My husband and I are part of the select group that does not have Internet on our phones.  Can you imagine?  When we are out in public places, it would be helpful to have the Internet to search for local hot spots, find a business, get a phone number, etc.  When we get stuck in a rut, we usually end up calling a friend or family member to do a quick search online.  The sticky part is when we cannot get ahold of anyone.  That is why NetZero was created, for life on the go.  

I had the chance to try out the NetZero 4G HotSpot. Setting it up was as easy as 1-2-3.  After turning on the device, the wireless network was immediately available.  I entered the password on the screen and was able to tap into a new world, the world of 4G.  I hooked up two wireless devices and had the chance to surf the web, along with streaming an online movie.  The speed was amazing, the signal strength indicated five bars and it did not drop my connection, which does sometimes happen with Comcast.  The device is lightweight and small enough to fit into my purse, or even a pocket.  I'm really looking forward to using HotSpot on those summer days when we spend our afternoons at the park or weekend get-a-ways at the beach.  Also, when we visit my mother-in-law, we need to deal with her slow Internet speed.  From now on, I'll bring my HotSpot along and not have to sit and sit and sit waiting for pages to upload.  

 

Overall, I am highly impressed with the interface and how user-friendly this device is.  The price points are reasonable, in comparison to what cell phone providers are presently charging.  I also like the fact that up to eight Wi-Fi enabled devices can use this, within 150 feet.  My one wish would be that this device was usable beyond 150 feet.

My Thoughts:
I think this is a really amazing product. We purchased a Blue-Ray player with wifi last year for about $200, along with some extra cables for another $20 or so, just so that we could stream our Netflix through our TV, even though we don't own one single Blue Ray Movie in our entire collection of movies. I thought it seemed a bit silly at the time, but even sillier now that I know there's a product out there we could have purchased for just this purpose. If you are looking for a way to get the features of your computer on your TV, this is it! You can get vudu, Netflix, pandora, youtube, facebook and more through this box. It retails for anywhere from $70 to $110 online right now, but I'm sure there are always discounts floating around. Check it out for yourself!

I think this is a fantastic invention. Then there is the other option, the anal thermometer, but who wants to do that? This is why I am so glad someone finally came up with a reliable, non invasibe thermometer for kids (and adults).

My Thoughts:

With this chic and stylish design, it's not only fun to carry around, but is also easy to operate, which is a plus for people who are not as technically savvy, which I am not. This camcorder takes still photos and videos with fairly good quality. With a 3x zoom you are limited in what you can shoot, but for the price and the specs, it's a good camera.

My only qualm with this camcorder is that it sucks the life out of batteries very quickly. To fix this, I intend on buying rechargeable batteries, but if you don't, you may be spending a lot of money on regular batteries to keep this running.

Holiday Hoopla - Haier 7" Digital LCD TV

This item is perfect for the gadget guru on your holiday shopping list!

I am highly impressed with this portable TV. Since my cell phone plan does not include Internet service, this is a great option for me to catch local TV shows when on the go. It is small enough to fit into my purse, backpack or attache. This TV comes standard with a phone jack, audio/video inputs, AV cables, rechargeable Lithium battery, power adapter, cigarette lighter adapter, antenna, self-support bracket, triple A batteries and a remote control, which is slightly longer then a credit card. It is easily programmable, either by using the remote or the unit itself. The picture was sharp, color was vibrant and the sound quality was clear. Many older TVs require a digital conversion box; however, the LCD TV does not, given the fact it is already digital. We do live in a digital world! My only reservation about this TV is that I would prefer a slimmer, lighter design

Garden Series - Wireless Weather Thermometer

Awhile back we received a wonderful indoor/outdoor wireless weather forecaster. I had always admired these products in the homes of our friends and family members and wandered how accurate they were and if they every looked at them. It turns out that they are very accurate, and we use ours almost every day, to know how to plan for our day. This item can be found at IVG online.


I am highly satisfied with the 4 Day Internet Powered Wireless Forecaster with Forecast Alerts and E.L. Backlight. This product by far makes my life simpler and more efficient; gone are the days of waking up early to watch the weather. I set the forecaster up in my bedroom, and despite it being on a completely different floor then my router, it picks up reception clearly without any breaks in the signal strength. The backlight is something that I definitely could not live without. Best of all, there is no subscription required. Just plug it in, register the product online and receive your weather forecast.

It has been so helpful in knowing when we should water our garden and when we can let it be, as this forecaster tells us the chance of precipitation for the day. It's a handy and very useful product to own!

Epson Stylus NX515 - Review

This Epson printer is amazing! Gone are the days of waiting several minutes for a 10-page black and white document to print. In the past, I have owned several printers such as HP and Brother products, but never an Epson. This printer by far, exceeded all of my expectations. It is not only the quickest printer I have owned, but it also provides concise, sharp copies. As soon as the printer arrived, I put it to the test. From scanning pictures, copying documents for work and printing, it has proved easy to use to efficient. We recently got back from a trip to Mexico and had a professional picture taken of us. We wanted to share the picture with family and friends online, but we only had the original picture, no digital copy. Thanks to the Epson NX510, I was able to scan the picture, save it to my computer and share it with everyone online.



Did I mention this printer is also wireless? Imagine printing with just the click of a button, no more lugging the laptop to the office, dealing with USB cords and all that fuss. I can print from anywhere inside my house and in the front yard. If you like convenience, high quality, efficiency and a name you can trust, I would HIGHLY recommend the Epson NX510 without reservation. Graduations are right around the corner. This would be the perfect gift for the high school grad!

Since we got our 2 kittens in January our nice dark brown sofa and recliner have turned into grayish/white fur covered furniture. The kittens seem to think that these are their own personal beds and bath tubs, in which they can roll around and leave as many fur balls behind as they would like. My husband and I were both amazed at how light yet powerful this handheld vacuum is. We have already told all our friends and family via facebook that they all need to get one, especially those with pets or children who tend to make messes. It's a life saver, and I couldn't praise this product enough!

"I work in Philadelphia, PA, and I am proud to say that several months ago they made hand-held cell phone usage illegal while driving or riding a bicycle. As you can imagine, this was good news to some and bad news to others. I am highly impressed with this organization and their products. This device allows me to talk to my husband and I hear each and every word perfectly clearly, even in the last blizzard we had, with up to 50 mph winds.
